Teacher’s Review

Due to modern alternatives such as video and film streaming, it’s become a sad truth that we don’t read as much as we used to. To inspire reading among our students and teachers, we had the idea to hold our first Book Appreciation “Month” – which admittedly sounded better than Book Appreciation 6 Weeks.

Starting in the third week of September and finishing at the end of October, students at VSPH engaged in daily DEAR reading tasks. The concept of DEAR reading is simple, Drop Everything And Read. Throughout this project, students were required to initially choose a book then read 20 minutes of it per day before completing a daily journal of what they have read.

In the final week of October, every student at VSPH completed an art project which represented their chosen book. All of the reading and the artwork built up to our Book Celebration Day on the final Friday of October where students were required to dress up as a character from their book, to take part in a costume competition, submit their artwork to the art competition, and enjoy several student performances. It was a fantastic experience for all.

Throughout the month, I was thrilled to see our students going out of their way to immerse themselves in reading and until now, I’m still seeing students with books in their hands. It was a slow start, but we quickly reached the point where a majority of students were clearly enjoying reading, were consistently completing detailed journal entries for each day, and we excited to talk about what they had been reading.

I was thrilled to see so many students (and teachers) putting an exceptional amount of effort into their costumes and thoroughly enjoying themselves throughout our Book Celebration Day event.

Students’ Recommendation

  ///  《The Outsiders》(局外人)

《The Outsiders》

作者:Albert Camus

  ///  《Harry Potter》(哈利波特)

《Harry Potter》

作者:J. K. Rowling

  ///  《And Then There Were None》(无人生还)

《And Then There

Were None》

Agatha Christie
